Critc's Corner
By R.J. Cooper
Hello, and welcome to my Critic鈥檚 Corner. This is the first review I鈥檝e written so bear with me. Today I will be reviewing the restaurant known as Marks. It is located on Main Street in Kutztown. These reviews will be based on atmosphere, service, and of course, food. So, let鈥檚 begin.
Atmosphere: Marks is set up like a typical small restaurant: kitchen area, bar counter, and a table area. The kitchen is directly behind the bar, so you can see them prepare the food. Over the kitchen is a chalkboard with the menu written on it. And boy, do they have a lot to choose from. I feel sorry for whoever had to write the menu. The place seemed clean enough, but I can鈥檛 say about the bathroom as I didn鈥檛 check it out.
Service: The service seemed nice enough. There was only one waitress, so it might take a while to be served on a busy day. Everyone else was making the food. Fortunately, I went there on a slow day, and was served quickly. Depending on how crowded it is, the service is relatively quick. I ordered and got my food all in about twenty minutes.
Food: Okay, now we get to the reason why anyone goes to a restaurant. Food. I had ordered a cheese steak, an order of shrimp %26amp; fries, and a milkshake. The cheese steak was good. Nice amount of meat, although a little dry, not too much cheese. (Personally, I don鈥檛 think there is such a thing as too much cheese.) The fries were acceptable, although I鈥檝e had better. As for the shrimp, they take the term literally. There was more breading then there was shrimp, although they did taste good. The milkshake tasted well enough, but it was a little watery.
Overall: I give Marks four out of five stars. It鈥檚 a pleasant little place that serves a great variety of food, with friendly enough service. The food itself is good enough for someone with my taste. Just don鈥檛 go expecting anything overly fancy. It鈥檚 just a plain restaurant for plain people. But in a town like Kutztown, that鈥檚 exactly what it should be.What do you think of my restaurant review/?
I agree with rick, you had more negative than positive things to say- so the restaurant would not deserve 4/5.
Also- go read more reviews. Restaurant critics are usually VERY descriptive. You need to talk about the wood paneled interior of the restaurant and the kitchy feel of the decor. Talk about your server being in her late 20's with a bubbly personality and how she suggested that day's special of chicken fried steak with a cream gravy sauce and seasoned home fries.
Oh, and food critics always order every course a restaurant has to offer. Im not sure if the shrimp and fries was some sort of appetizer or a second entree you ordered.... But you need to talk about an appetizer maybe a salad or soup course, the entree (and maybe trying a bite of your companions entree) dessert, after dinner drinks etc.... By ordering each course a critic can not only try more of the menu without looking suspicious- (ie why is this guy ordering half the menu???? do you think he's the critic from Kutztown paper???) but he can review the timing of the courses... Did the entrees come before you had a chance to enjoy the salad? Did the server push desert on you before you were half way done with dinner? Was the table pre-bussed and kept tidy?
Great job- and keep practicing... Being a food critic would be such a neat job! What do you think of my restaurant review/?
A restaurant critic would not be in a place that you described. What do you think of my restaurant review/?
ALWAYS check out the bathroom. Also you're talking about service- what time of day was it? I also don't see why you would give 4 of 5 stars- the food didn't sound good. You had more negative than positive.
Otherwise, good job.
I like how you've segmented your response into the different sections. I'm no food critic but I've learned that you can judge a lot by the upkeep/cleanliness of a restaurant's washrooms so personally I would check them out. Under service you might make mention of the service of the staff itself, ie. where they friendly, helpful, polite. Based on your review of the restaurant I probably would not go to it, also you might make mention of pricing, ie. were the prices reasonable or expensive.
