There are quite a few sites out there with restaurant reviews but most seem to offer only big names restaurants and chains, or have a smaller restaurant...with absolutely no reviews. Does anyone know of somewhere I find find reviews of "local", small-time restaurants? How can I find good, hole-in-the wall restaurants?
There are usually web sites for local restaurant reviews when you check into that particular city or town... I have found that the online Yellow pages restaurant listings offer some good insight as to good locally owned restaurants. They list them of course by alphabetical listing, but there is a star rating system for each restaurant, that people enter in their personal reviews of that restaurant.... I usually find a good restaurant that way. I also always ask locals in that town where a good place is as well. There is almost nothing you can't find on the internet though.
Good Luck
You might be able to find some information in the local newspaper. There might be a review of a new resturant that opened. One suggestion an older guy gave me once, was go to the cafe with the most cars around it! The locals will go to the ones with the best food and price. You could also ask at a gas station, what they would recommend. How can I find good, hole-in-the wall restaurants?
Where are you looking?
the only way is to ask around. talk to local residents and find out who has the good stuff.
where are you or where are you headed? maybe i can help. How can I find good, hole-in-the wall restaurants?
There are three travel guides that I like for recommendations of small, hole-in-the-wall restaurants: Rick Steves' travel guides, Time Out travel guides, and Lonely Planet.
You can find the books in bookstores and libraries, but they also have URLs:

When I'm looking for a great "hole in the wall" place far from the maddening tourist crowd, I'll usually Google the local town I'm looking for and ask for restaurant reviews...usually whatever the local paper prints is on-line...FYI, 3 great "Holes" in Port Chester, NY: Coyote Flaco and El Fiestejo...excellent, authentic, Mexican cuisine...Oh, and same town, Pat's Hubba Hubba: great chili cheese burgers! Has been there for probably 50 years, same spot, 1 long counter that fits maybe 12 people...some days you have to stand in line! Happy Hunting! Also, check out THE FOOD NETWORK on-line and they'll have tons of locations!
If you get the Food Network, do yourself a favor and watch Alton Brown's Feasting on Asphalt. You can go to the web site to look at the places they have been and what kinds of food they had. http://www.altonbrown.com/adventure/tarm鈥?/a>
ask the locals
I usually refer to free local papers. For example, Dallas has one that is the Dallas Observer and they have great reviews and such listed.
try peep holes........on southside
