I have just got a position writing restaurant reviews for a local food magazine. This is an unpaid position (apart from the meals which are paid for). Can i call myself a freelance journalist? and also, can i set up a self employed business as a freelance journalist now? any good advice will be greatly appreciated. Can i call myself a Freelance Journalist?
You can call your self a nuclear scientist as long as you don't try to obtain a job using false pretenses.
It's probably stretching it a bit since you don't receive income as a result of your writing, but you can certainly register a business and describe it's trade as "freelance journalism".
Were you thinking of parlaying this into a "real" job in the media? It's a start and as you get more experience you would be able to send a CV plus clippings of your reviews to other publications and perhaps local radio and TV stations - they are always looking for new talent.
Good luck!
(and bon appetit!)
No, a freelance one is one that gets paid but takes various jobs from anyoneCan i call myself a Freelance Journalist?
You can call yourself anything you want, but your job description fits that of a food critic. Keep the receipts because your meals are considered income and you have to pay income taxes on it.
Indeed you can. However, to be legally defined as freelance I believe you have to have two or more paying clients (you'd need to check that with an accountant to be taxed accordingly). Can i call myself a Freelance Journalist?
You review food for free? I guess it's a start but i'd need some form of steady income before i go over my job description...
