When a food critic goes to a restaurant do they have to pay for the food that they eat and review?

A real food critic? Yes they do. The restaurant usually doesn't know they are being reviewed.

There are "critics" that the restaurant will invite / hire and the critic's not so independent opinion is then either put in a paper / magazine or has a TV spot where they go thru most of the places menu. This makes it more of an infomercial than anything else. Here the restaurant not only gives the food away, they usually pay several hundred to several thousand dollars for the review. When a food critic goes to a restaurant do they have to pay for the food that they eat and review?
If they are famous, not all the time. A local paper critic, yes. When a food critic goes to a restaurant do they have to pay for the food that they eat and review?
for another site I found .... it looks like they do - interesting question.

;-)

Payment

Pay in full for all meals and services. Don't accept free meals or use gift certificates donated by the restaurant or a special-interest group. Publications should strive to budget enough money for restaurant visits so the reviewer can do the job without having to resort to personal funds to help pay the bill.
